The Madeira Aquarium offers a guided tour to the "World of Silence". All through 12 thematic tanks more than 70 typical species that populate the Madeiran seas can be observed.
One of the great attractions is the shark that swims gracefully in the main tank, followed by 50 other species, like the Madeiran rays (raja maderensis), the Stingray (Dasyatis pastinaca), the Crevalle jack and the groupers.
One is about a dazzling sight of the vast and complex diversity of living creatures of the Madeiran fauna sea that goes from the predators to the invertebrates including the solitary fish and the ones that swim in shoals.
Thus, there are tanks where shy morays (Sharktooth moray - Gymnothorax maderensis), the ancient octopuses, the fascinating starfish, the spider crabs, the shrimp or the sea urchin stand out.
The Madeira Aquarium is placed in Porto Moniz, more precisely at “Forte de João Batista” (or João Batista’s Fort), a monument erected in 1730 as a reaction to the onslaughts and the attacks carried out by the pirates on the local population. Its ruins have been restored in 1998, and the Fort has now its original façade. But the interior was adapted to accommodate the now existing Aquarium.
The equipment of the Aquarium includes a shop of souvenirs, an exhibition hall, a library with internet access, a coffee shop and a liqueur bar.
But the surprises are yet to unveil. There is nothing like getting a closer look at the "Thematic Months", the "Fantastic Nights in the Aquarium", the "Children’s Ateliers" and the dives in the main tank. A playful and cultural experience that you cannot miss. |
