Porto Moniz
Porto Moniz

The picturesque town of Porto Moniz is about 48 km from the capital and, like São Vicente, is on the north coast of the island.

In 1533, by which time it was already a parish, the name of the former Ponta do Tristão was changed to Porto Moniz. It was only after the Second World War that the road between this municipality and São Vicente was built to put an end to its isolation from the rest of the island.
The road was literally dug out of the rocky hillside. It has a number of tunnels and there are waterfalls cascading over it on their down way to the sea. The road is considered one of the prettiest and most impressive on the island.
A new, wider road has recently been built parallel to the original one.
It’s worth taking a trip along the old road, which is now open only in the direction São Vicente - Porto Moniz.
Seixal is a small village in the municipality. It boasts the vineyards with the tastiest grapes in Madeira, a series of natural swimming pools, a quay and a black-sand beach.

Chão da Ribeira
This village is located in a large valley overlooking Seixal and is surrounded by a rich variety of plants and shrubs belonging to the Laurissilva Forest.
The stream bed is occupied by farmland and plough sheds in a truly bucolic setting.

Miradouro do Véu da Noiva
The belvedere’s name Véu da Noiva, or Bridal Veil, comes from its proximity to a waterfall that is so high that it gushes torrents of water down the hillside, reminding us of a bride’s most romantic accessory. This incredible demonstration of nature’s power is on the old road between São Vicente and Seixal.

Porto Moniz Living Science Centre
While you are touring the north coast, take the opportunity to visit this new scientific and cultural facility.
This magnificent work of architecture is on the new sea front at Porto Moniz and is a kind of cultural centre for both adults and children.
The Living Science Centre will house national and international science exhibitions and, as a result, has signed an agreement with the Pavilhão do Conhecimento - Ciência Viva in Lisbon.

Miradouro da Santa
When you leave Porto Moniz on the road that spirals up to Santa, stop for a while at this belvedere and take in the panoramic view of the countryside, with natural swimming pools and Mole Island.

Population: 2,927
Bathing areas: Porto Moniz and Seixal natural swimming pools.
